ABSOLUTELY EXCELLENT BOOK FOR THE BEGINNER TEACHER! I wish I had owned this book when I began my 20 year teaching career following my 20 year career as an Air Force officer. All the teacher-ed classes you take are important in establishing your teaching career, especially if you are coming from another career. In the Air Force, I was dealing with adults every day. That certainly changed the first day I was in a middle school classroom. I immediately knew that I was the "learner" in my school and my first classroom. It was NOTHING like my career with adults. Jim does an exceptional job of explaining the key factors in determining the success of a new teacher, or as a reminder for the experienced teacher. My favorite portions of the book were Sections 3,8,9,and 38. I always took excessive time in preparing my classroom to visually motivate my students. When I taught gifted social studies in middle school I spent an entire week in my summer before the class taking apart older National Geographic Magazine photos of young children living their lives in cultures worldwide. I posted them in collages on poster boards, which I had laminated. I covered one whiteboard with a selection of the posters, which I changed regularly throughout the year. There was never a day in my room that students, mine and those from other classes, in my room looking t the photos and asking limitless questions regarding the images. The boards proved to be an inspiration for limitless students, hopefully interesting them in the study of geography. The most important recommendation is in Section 38, which encourages all teachers to get to know their students and randomly show up at activities outside the school environment. Students and parents remember every time you show up at a swim meet, a church presentation, a musical performance, or a competition. It shows you CARE about their student. Get involved in your students'lives. It creates a strong bond with your students and their families. I wish there had been a book like this when I was preparing for my teaching career. My hat is off to Jim Gomes for a MASTERPIECE for beginner teachers.Product details

Everyone who works closely with other people can benefit from this excellent text. Not only teachers, but also pastors, office managers, salespersons, supervisors, and many others will discover useful and meaningful helps for effective inter-personal relationships. Specifically, the text provides much practical advice and example for classroom management, gleaned from Mr. Gomes' 35-year successful teaching career. He details the effective skills that a teacher/leader needs, from first encounters through on-going management. He shows many examples that help the leader to earn respect and foster trust. He offers insight for dealing with busy schedules and unforeseen circumstances that occur in others' lives, both students and co-workers alike. Gomes helps with non-verbal communication skills, and he offers good advice on expectations for others when the leader must be absent. The text is helpful from the first page. It is readable and engaging, an obvious aid from an experienced leader. I highly recommend this text!
